Michael J. Sexton MD, FACEP
Dr. Sexton graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1972. He
did post graduate training at San Francisco General Hospital. He is a Fellow of the
American College of Emergency Physicians and a Diplomat of the American Board of
Spanning a career of 40 years in active practice of Emergency Medicine at Kaiser
Foundation Medical Center San Rafael California, Dr. Sexton held numerous
administrative positions including being twice elected as President of the Medical
Staff of his Medical Center and serving as Chief of the Department of Emergency
Dr. Sexton has been active in EMS serving 20 years as the Medical Director of the
San Rafael Fire Department. He has served on countless community commissions,
task forces and committees. He was the Chair of the Marin County Task Force on
Prehospital Advance Directives and the Chair of the Marin County Community Task
Force on Domestic Violence Prevention.
Dr Sexton was elected Chair of the Board of Trustees of the California Medical
Association in 2001 and President in 2005. He is the current Chair of the Council on
Legislation of the American Medical Association.
The Marin Medical Society honored Dr Sexton with the William J. Filante, MD, Award
for Outstanding Legislative Service in 1999 and the Marin Medical Society Physician
of the Year Award in 2006. In 2007 he received the prestigious Cecil B. Cutting
Leadership Award from The Permanente Medical Group.
