Chris Burton – 8/15

Today, we visited the Loayza Hospital which is the oldest hospital in Peru. It was amazing to see the stark difference in patient care practice to what I have grown accustomed to at home. Patient’s beds line opposite walls with just enough space between them to allow medical personel along the bedside. Tuberculosis patients are in the same room but at the far end with only a mask to prevent the spread of the disease. Additionally, all the windows are open to keep the hospital ventilated. It was an eye-opening experience that made me reflect on how lucky we are to have the healthcare we have in the states and also how simple healthcare can be.
