History Lessons – Kayla Jelinek

Today was our first full day in Lima! We spent the day adjusting to our surroundings and exploring the city. A group of us headed to the Historic Centre of  Lima. There were various historical buildings and museums to choose from, the most notable of which was the Monastery of San Francisco. This church served as a cemetery until the early 1800s and houses thousands of bones. During the tour, we were able to walk down into some of the old passageways and see the various bones and skulls displayed. It was nice to have this day to explore and learn more about Peruvian history and culture. We are looking forward to visiting a hospital in Lima tomorrow and heading to clinic in Iquitos in a few days!
