Today we went to Dr. Smith’s clinic outside of Indiana. Her stories described the patients we’ve seen in the past two weeks here in Peru. Many of these patients are in dire need of vitamins, antibiotics, and parasite medications such as Mebendazole. It is easy to fall into the trap of getting frustrated when it seems that a patient is being dishonest to you here, but when I think about it, who can blame them? There is an enormous deficit in nutrition in Iquitos, on the Amazon, and many other places I am sure. This is why people such as Dr. Smith and clinics such as hers are so important in areas like this. She sees an enormous number of patients on a daily basis and provides the with all she can in order to help the people of the area. We are all very fortunate to have met such an incredible example of a physician who is truly willing to give everything up for the people who need the care.
