Update from Kayla J. – Clinic Day 1 – 9 Aug 2013

Day 5 – Clinic Day 1

9 Aug 2013

I spent the first day of clinic in Iquitos in OB-GYN. We saw a lot of conditions that were easily treated with antibiotics and antifungals. These included bacterial vaginosis, urinary tract infections, and pelvic inflammatory disease. It was wonderful to be able to provide these patients with instant treatment. However, some patients presented with pathologies that were not easily treatable, the most remarkable of which was a woman who presented with cervical cancer. The doctors here in Peru are on strike, so we did the best we could to refer her to a hospital with the hopes that she will be able to see a doctor sometime soon. The cancer had been constantly bleeding for 2 months and resulted in severe anemia. This case reinforced how important the cervical cancer screening research we are doing here is. I hope that with our results we can somehow bring attention to the country’s need for frequent screening and ultimately HPV vaccination.
